It’s been nearly seven years since actor Derek Luke made his big screen debut in the film “Antwone Fisher.” Recently, he portrayed Sean “Diddy” Combs in the biopic “Notorious.”

The Jersey City, N.J. native is now trying his hand at the small screen–starring as paramedic Cameron Boone in NBC’s new medical drama, “Trauma.” The show is his first significant role in television, though he has appeared in several music videos for artists such as Monica and Alicia Keys.

Derek sat down with theGrio and discussed his transition to television, his dreams for the future and the role mentors have played in his life.

While lots of shows focus on medical emergencies inside the ER, NBC’s Trauma is centered on the scene of the accident, star Derek Luke says. TVGuide.com caught up with Luke about how intense filming has been and why he chose this project as his transition from film to television.

TVGuide.com: What drew you to Trauma?
Derek Luke: I happened to work with one of the producers before, Pete Berg, [who] directed me in Friday Night Lights. I thought who best to understand me coming from film and…we had the same goals to inspire. I never felt like I was leaving film to come to TV. I always felt that because the stakes were so high, the part was so juicy, it was an open path to go and do both. And I really fell in love with my character.

TVGuide.com: It’s clear your character will have some struggles balancing his career with his family. Can you talk more about that?
Luke: I play Cameron Boone and…he’s the only guy [on the team] that has a family. It’s something to be traumatized at work, but to have to hide it on the inside because it’s so heavy [and] you want to be the filter for your wife and your kids. I want Boone to represent the average working man and his challenges. He can be heroic on one side, but he can fall flat on his face on the other.

‘Trauma’

If it’s true that you can’t look away from a car crash, this new show should do very well. “Trauma” starts with a bang – a spectacularly horrific helicopter collision in San Francisco. (I suppose you could also count the sex scene inside the ambulance with a paramedic known as “Naughty Nancy,” but let’s not be crass.)

One year later, a team of emergency medical technicians struggle to come to grips with the tragedy, as well as the everyday fallout of their jobs. Racing to the kinds of gruesome accident scenes that any sane person would run away from takes its toll.

Derek Luke (“Antwone Fisher“) plays a family man trying not to bring his grief home. Anastasia Griffith (“Damages”) is magnetic as a tough Tatum O’Neal lookalike. And Cliff Curtis (“Whale Rider”) struts around as Rabbit, a rebel helicopter pilot.

“Trauma” is determined to shock and awe, and it succeeds. Warning: There are some serious gross-out moments. But the biggest surprise is the last scene, which is quiet and affecting. After all the numbingly high-adrenaline action, you might be surprised to feel some real emotion.
